Rachabanda turns battleground

ELURU: Tourism minister Vatti Vasant Kumar and local TDP MLA Chintamaneni Prabhakar traded blows at the Rachabanda programme here on Saturday and finally fell from the dais after a heated scuffle triggered by the opposition MLA's protest over breach of protocol at the event.
According to sources, as soon as the Rachabanda programme began at the zilla parishad office here on Saturday morning, Prabhakar, the TDP MLA from Denduluru, arrived at the scene with his supporters. Vatti Vasant Kumar and Eluru Congress MP Kavuri Sambasiva Rao and a few others were on the dais at that time. Even as Prabhakar began voicing his protests over not being invited onto the dais despite being the local MLA, the tourism minister invited a local Congress leader K Ramachandra Rao, whom Prabhakar had defeated in the last assembly elections, onto the stage.
An enraged Prabhakar got onto the dais and entered into heated arguments with Vatti upon which the two began exchanging blows. Even as the security personnel rushed to separate the two, the ministers fell down from the dais in the scuffle. Tension prevailed at the event for some time as TDP workers began staging protests, even as the cops arrested Prabhakar and took him to Three Town police station.
TDP workers later staged a dharna outside the police station and demanded action against Vatti and Kavuri on the grounds that it was they who had breached the protocol by ignoring the TDP MLA and inviting the losing local Congress leader to the stage. To placate the agitating opposition party workers, cops later agreed to book the minister as well.
The Rachabanda programme concluded late in the afternoon and the Congress leaders left the venue. The Eluru MP claimed that Prabhakar had come to the event with the specific aim of creating trouble.
