Why is Modi govt afraid of this Dabangg cop?

AHMEDABAD: He is known as a Dabangg cop, who does not bow down to any political pressure. Satish Verma, a member of SIT probing Ishrat Jahan encounter has stuck to his guns despite heavy peer and political pressure.

Considered very sound at paper work and scientific investigations, Verma has played a key role in proving that Ishrat and three others were killed in cold blood. He has questioned moves by fellow SIT members, especially state representative Mohan Jha, whenever he feared the probe was obstructed, delayed or misguided.

Verma has even challenged decisions of former SIT chairman Karnail Singh and accused Jha of playing hand-in-glove with authorities in forcing witnesses to retract. Most importantly, while current SIT chief RR Verma and Jha want to opt out of the probe, Satish Verma wants to take investigations to a logical end.

Verma encounters trouble

Trouble is brewing for inspector general of police Satish Verma with an encounter case of 1996-97 being resurrected against him. The brother of a man, who died in police custody in Porbandar when Verma was the superintendent there, has approached the high court alleging the police took no action against the cop despite specific orders by the high court in 1998.
