BJP wants T break to corner UPA govt on 2G

NEW DELHI/HYDERABAD: In what is a sign of mounting tension between TRS and BJP, the principal opposition party in Parliament is annoyed with the former for repeatedly stalling the winter session on the separate statehood demand for Telangana and foiling its grand plan of cornering the UPA government and Union home minister P Chidambaram on the 2G scam.
According to sources, BJP leader Sushma Swaraj has conveyed to president K Chandrasekhar Rao her party's wish that, come Monday, his TRS should stop hijacking proceedings in Lok Sabha as it was coming in the way of the opposition raising issues of national importance. "If TRS continues to disrupt proceedings, then the BJP would stop supporting its Telangana friend," is said to be the message sent out to the TRS chief.
Sources said the BJP is upset that despite its having devised a strategy to embarrass PM Manmohan Singh and home minister Chidambaram, it could not execute the same in view of the clamour for Telangana which has effectively stalled the House during the first week of winter session.
Along with the demand for Chidambaram's resignation, the opposition party has plans to raise issues ranging from the Mumbai serial blasts, Maoist violence and corruption to black money stashed abroad. But all that has come a cropper due to the Telangana ruckus.
"Telangana is not the only important issue to be raised in the House.
There is no doubt that this (Telangana) is a very significant issue as far as TRS is concerned. But there are other issues of pressing national importance that need to be debated in the House," is, according to sources, the line BJP has taken in order to enlist TRS's cooperation from Monday.
The BJP is hoping that in case TRS agrees to give it some time, the Telangana Congress MPs, too, would be silenced.
This is because once the two TRS MPs, KCR and Vijayashanti, raise the Telangana demand, the Congress MPs from the region cannot remain silent as that would invoke a negative sentiment in their constituencies.
According to sources, the BJP is also upset with TRS as repeated disruptions over the Telangana demand has rival Samajwadi Party (SP) taking potshots at the principal opposition party over the Uttar Pradesh assembly resolution, moved by Mayawati's BSP, for division of the state into four.
"We are opposing the division of UP for different reasons, although we are backing the Telangana cause. With TRS raising the separate statehood demand, the SP is taking every opportunity to embarrass us upon the assertion that we are projecting contradictory stances," BJP sources said.
However, it was not clear whether TRS would accede to the request to remain silent for a few days, allowing the BJP to take centre stage. In the meantime, Telangana Congress MPs vowed not to allow House proceedings to take place even if the TRS decided to lay low for a little while.
