NEW DELHI: Even as BJP demanded action against law minister Salman Khurshid for violating the model code of conduct
by announcing 9% sub-quota for backward Muslims, election authorities
in Uttar Pradesh issued a showcause notice to his wife Louise, also
Congress's candidate from Farrukhabad, to explain her husband's
statement within three days.
The notice was served by returning officer of Farrukhabad assembly constituency. EC is also expected to issue a notice to the law minister on his alleged promise.
Khurshid, however, rejected the charges against him, claiming that he was only referring to the party's election manifesto while campaigning for Louise. He hit back at the BJP saying the party was following double standards because it claims right to promise construction of a Ram temple. "It means that we should not bring out a manifesto, not deliver a speech and sit back at home and elections should be held without all these... They can talk of building Ram temple and we are only referring to a provision which is already there," he said.
