NEW DELHI: Long waiting
periods are generally associated with high demand. But strangely for the
Indian auto industry, the opposite is coming true. As the car market
stares at its worst slowdown in years, the waiting time for delivery of
certain models can be as long as eight months!
The star models that have managed to defy slowdown blues include the diesel versions of the Swift hatchback and Dzire sedan from Maruti, Fortuner and Innova from Toyota, XUV500 from Mahindra, Jazz and the Brio hatchbacks from Honda and the Verna sedan from Hyundai. Such is the demand for some of these cars that customers are willing to pay a premium over the actual cost to get delivery ahead of schedule and beat waiting times that range from two to eight months.
"This is by far the most bipolar demand pattern I have ever seen in the market in my career," says Shashank Srivastava, chief general manager (sales & marketing) at Maruti Suzuki, the country's biggest carmaker.
