HYDERABAD: An estimated 50,000 weddings are set to take place across the state on November 27 as the auspicious 'Margasira Suddha Tadiya' falls on this day, immediately followed by Pournami.
Function halls, hotels, banquet halls and kalyana mandapams have been booked much in advance for the auspicious day. "There's a mad rush to conduct weddings on that day. As many as 20 persons approached us for bookings, but only two couples will get the chance to tie the knot at our venue," said Aparna Biswas, banquets sales executive at a top hotel.
According to purohits, November 27 has many propitious elements attached to it, which is a rare phenomenon. The day is devoid of any bad muhurtham and the nakshatra is Mula. Priests said any wedding or function set for the day in the auspicious Margasira month would succeed as all the planets seem to be in a 'favourable' condition. There is no bad time in the day except between 10.30 and 12.15 in the night.
Sources said demand for the day is not only because it is auspicious, but also because of lack of auspicious days for almost six months in the coming year. Such a situation had arisen five years ago. "We would be losing as many as 35 muhurthams next year. From January to May there are no propitious dates. Our hands are full now," S Hanumanthachari, state Brahmana Seva Sangham secretary told TOI.
Come Sunday, the itinerary of the purohits, is replete with weddings at several places. "Several of us do not even have breathing space, as we would be running from one marriage hall to another," a senior priest said. Not only priests, even function halls and wedding mandapams are unable to cope up with the huge demand. "All our venues are booked. We have several requests pending for November 27. The demand is massive," said Nirala, manager of a city-based function hall.
Meanwhile, the wedding scene at Tirumala is slightly different. Though there is demand for November 27 elsewhere, hundreds of couples are waiting to tie the knot at the Lord's abode on November 30 instead of November 27. "Around 150 couples are getting married on November 27, but the number will reach 300 on November 30 as that day falls on Sravana nakshatra, a favourite of Lord Venkateswara," said a priest at Tirumala.
