HYDERABAD: Students with poor attendance seems to have found a new excuse in the form of Telangana agitation to argue their way into examination hall.
Citing Sakala Janula Samme, several engineering and pharmacy students from Telangana have demanded the JNTU-Hyderabad to relax the 75% compulsory attendance rule. However, according to sources, the university might grant them only 5-10% relaxation.
The university authorities said that they had received several petitions from student unions and parents seeking attendance relaxation. Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) authorities said they would decide on percentage of relaxation in another two days. JNTU has the highest number of affiliated engineering and pharmacy colleges in the Telangana region.
The authorities, however, said that they will not be able to condone attendance shortage if it is less than 40% as that goes against the university rules. But students complained that even a 10% relaxation might not save their academic year.
"Owing to a medical condition I could not to attend the classes. I could have made up for the lost days if there was no agitation. With just a 10% relaxation I may not be able to write the examination," said Haseena Saba, a student of Shadan Pharmacy College. Several students, citing various reasons, had applied for attendance exemption from JNTU. As per the university rules, a total of 75% attendance is required to write the examination. Students who have up to 65% of attendance are, however, allowed to write the examination if they produce a medical certificate.
"Every year around 1 to 1.5% of students apply for attendance exemption and this cannot be related to the agitation. We do not a have provision to exempt all the students," said K Lal Kishore, registrar of the JNTU. JNTU's semester examinations are scheduled to begin on December 1 for second, third and fourth year students. In fact, students from across the three regions are facing attendance shortage problem this year.
"As many as 4,000 students will not be able to appear for exam due to attendance shortage from Kakinada JNTU. They cannot be given exemption under any circumstances," said an official. He added that students from other regions might raise objections if exemption is given only to those from Telangana region.
"Over the past 20 years there were at least 1,000 students who had approached court asking for attendance exemption. Each time the court had turned down their plea. So the attendance shortage cannot be associated with only the Telangana agitation," he said.
